⚽Albert Ernest Lydall💕Grace Mary Ann Ramsey💒

Back in April, I saw this small collection of old photos for sale from a seller on eBay. I had bought old photos from Janet before, a lovely lady, she always gives me as much information as possible about any old photos I buy, so as these had writing on the back of each one I couldn’t resist. All the donations she receives she sells and profits go to charity.

They look like such a nice couple and we have writing on the back of every picture.

It says on the back of this first photo “Uncle Albert and Aunt Grace. Albert Lydall b1893. m1919 age 26. You can keep this if you wish” So with this information I was able to start a small family tree on Ancestry.

Albert Ernest Lydall and Grace Mary Ann Ramsey married on 26 April 1919 at Christ Church, Jamaica Street, Tower Hamlets, London. As you can see Albert continued to be a Soldier for a while after WW1.

Albert Ernest Lydall was born on 23 June 1893 in Mile End Old Town, London, he was one of thirteen children that I have found so far of father Joseph Phineas Lara Lydall 1849-1923 and mother Mary Ann (Richards) 1952-1915.

Grace Mary Ann Ramsey was born on 12 January 1895 in London, London, her father was Edwin Ramsey 1859-1939 and her mother was Emma Elizabeth (Jones) 1858-1945, she had one sister May Clara b1892.

On the back “Albert Lydall. b1893 m1919 d1970”.
Says “Uncle Albert (Lydall)” again with his dates written. Because of a niece or nephew writing on the back of these photos, they were kept together.

These are the few images of the records I have found of Albert’s Military career.

As I was filling in some details on the tree I came across the 1939 Register and just couldn’t read what Albert’s job was.

Bottom of the page

Above, Albert and Grace living at 42 Hooking Green, Harrow. Never forget to look at the top of the next page!

The top of the next page.

Showing their daughter Gwendoline, an invalid, incapacitated, and also Grace’s Mum Emma, living at the same address.

So I thought I would have a look at the 1921 census and see what other details I could find out about Albert and Grace. The couple lived with Grace’s parents, her father was a School Keeper and they lived in the School House.

Albert’s occupation was an Engineering Clerk, Constructional Engineers. He worked for Dorman Long Co Ltd, 4 Central Buildings SW1. Steel Manufacturers and Constructional Engineers.

If you read what is said about Gwendoline, who I assumed was the couple’s daughter in 1939, I was able to confirm that she was their daughter from the 1921 census, and after more research, their only child.

The couple’s daughter was just 4 months old in 1921. I had added her to their tree and was shocked to see a death record pop up in the hints for her in 1940.

After looking to see if there was anything I could find in the newspaper records, I decided to order the digital death record for Gwendoline, so sad. Albert and I would think Grace too was present at her death, she died at home.

Their daughter’s cause of death at 19 was Broncho Pneumonia, Bronchitis and it also says that Gwendoline was Spastic Diplegia, which is a form of Cerebral Palsy.

This was their home at the time of the 1939 Register a semi-detached house at the end of a cul de sac, taken from Google Street. They stayed there until their deaths.

Grace died on 11 June 1977 in North Harrow, Middlesex, at the age of 82 and Albert died on 17 July 1983 in North Harrow, Middlesex, at the age of 90.

This group Football team photo is written on the back, it says it was taken in c1912 and you can see Albert far right at the back.

As you can see sitting front right is one of Albert’s brothers Henry Percy Lydall 1897-1973. Don’t they look alike, Henry went on to marry Ellen Elizabeth Cleal and be a ‘Civil Servant Senior Tax Officer Inland Revenue’ on the 1939 Register. He and his family moved out of London to Sussex.

Christ Church football club, Stepney, from around 1912. In the 1911 census, William Malkin lived at 104 Redmans Road, Stepney. The Lydall family lived at 70 Wellesley Street, Stepney. Just across the green from each other, likely going to the same school. The area on each side of the park has changed from those times, mostly flats now.

Here’s the direct link to the small tree I have compiled for the Lydall and Ramsey family on Ancestry: Lydall and Ramsey Family Tree

Are you descended from this family? Do you recognise anyone from the Football Club in Stepney, London?

Till next time then…….
