Sybil’s Film Stars Album📔1920s-30s

At the end of summer last year, I received a new collection of old photos and Ephemera into my care from a friend. We had discussed the collection a couple of times, as it belonged to a dear family friend, not a relative. But my friend thought that it was the right time to try and reach out to other members of different branches of this family in the hope of finding a forever home for these treasures.

The lady who was the owner of this collection passed away in 1993, and my friend took on the collection back then so that it didn’t get thrown away or destroyed, as Sybil, as she was known, never married or had any children.

I have finally been able to research this collection. I’ve been compiling Sybil’s family tree over the last few weeks with the information I’ve been given, and I’m making good progress with it. The family story will take me a little time; I don’t like to rush my research.

The small scrapbook is very fragile, so I have carefully taken pictures with my phone as I didn’t want to bend it too much by scanning.

Meanwhile, I thought you would all enjoy seeing this amazing collection put together by Sybil of Film Stars from the 1920s.

Betty Nuthall, Patricia Allen & Julie Suedo
Betty Nuthall

So many stars from a hundred years ago, have you heard of them all? I know I certainly haven’t.

There are a lot of pictures of Betty Nuthall; I think she must have been a favourite of Sybil’s.
Gloria Swanson
John Barrymore & Marceline Day. Ronald Colman & Vilma Banky
Mr Tom Mix

According to the following newspaper clippings, you could enter this competition with a chance to win £325 in prizes. I searched the newspaper archives, and the first mention of this competition was in July 1928.

From what I can see, there were 21 players who shared the prize money in the Masked Players Competition in October 1928.

I think it’s highly likely that Sybil entered this competition, don’t you? She was obviously a big fan of the Movies. I wonder if she won any prize money?

I love the bottom report about the 3ft shark and a porpoise. I do hope they were freed. Porpoises are still found around the UK.

Two piles of more stars have been cut out of the newspapers, but not stuck in the book. I might try and look out for another little empty scrapbook on my travels to put them all in. There are over sixty below.

These would look much better in a book.

I’ve enjoyed looking through all these celebrities from a hundred years ago. Hopefully, it won’t take me too many weeks to compile my blog about Sybil and her family, so keep a lookout.
