💞Bernard Corkhill💒Olwyn Jones🌸

This is another of my recent buys from Paul on eBay, he’d shared it on Twitter and he had some replies from followers with information about this couple that he pencilled on the back. It was such a lovely happy wedding picture I just couldn’t resist buying it.

Sarah, on Twitter, identified the couple for Paul and matched the date to the photo taken in the 1940s. Bernard Douglas Corkhill, 31, married Olwyn Edna Jones, 19, at the Methodist Church, Mount Road, Fleetwood, Blackpool on 26th April 1947. I’ve not found any children for the couple.

A really happy photo of this couple

I started a small family tree for the couple on Ancestry and because I found the wedding record I was able to add the fathers to the tree, always a good start.

Looking at the couple’s occupations on the marriage certificate above you can see exactly where I think they met, they were both ‘Temporary Clerks at the Ministry of Pensions’

Bernard’s parents were Thomas Kermode Corkhill (16 Jan 1882-14 Apr 1946) and Beatrice Dowd (1884-16 Jan 1946) they married 4 September 1911, see image above, and Bernard was their only child.

Corkhill family on the 1921 census from Find My Past.

Father Thomas was a Goods Clerk for the Midland Railway in 1921.

Olwyn’s parents were William Edward Jones born on 28 January 1879 in Woolwich, Kent and her mother Bertha Sumner, born on 18 May 1910.

William and Bertha Jones 1911 census. William is a Friend Fish & Chip Shop proprietor.

They had four children, William Edward born in November 1910, Violet b1913, John Sumner b1921 and Olwyn the youngest b1927. Of course, WW1 came between these children and these are the records of Olwyn’s father William from Ancestry. he was in the Royal West Kent Regiment.

William was a temporary clerk at the Labour Exchange in 1921, which was quite a change from Fish and Chips.

This is the Jones family below in 1939.

Now William is a Storekeeper in 1939 register.

Here’s the small family tree for the couple on Ancestry: Corkhill Jones Family

Bernard died on 25 April 1972 and he lived at 1 Wensleydale Close, Thornton, Blackpool. Olwyn still lived at the same address on the 2008 electoral registers. She died on 7 September 2018 at the age of 91.

This is the Methodist Church, Mount Road, Fleetwood where Bernard and Olwyn married.

Till next time then…..
