👒Sarah Ann Flook & Family

This is another of my finds from the Postcard Fair at Hellesveor Methodist Chapel, St Ives, Cornwall.

The younger woman is not wearing a ring so could this be Sarah Jane?

If you look very carefully at the back view you can just see where someone has written “Great Gran Perry (Flook) Sarah” It’s more visible when you tilt the card, always a good idea to do when you buy Carte de Visite or Cabinet Cards with a plain shiny back, just to see if there is any writing on it. Glad I checked all these as it would be easily missed.

I started a family tree with Sarah Flook marrying Mr Perry and looked for matches in the Bristol area where the photo was taken. Looking at parish marriages for Sarah Flook marrying Perry there were just two on Find My Past, both for the same marriage when Sarah Ann Flook married Joseph Perry on Christmas Day 1852 at St Barnabus Church, Warmley, Gloucestershire (6 miles from the centre of Bristol).

Sarah Ann was the daughter of John Flook, a Farmer, 1805-1879, and Charlotte Pinkett, 1802-1888, who married in Bristol on 11 September 1830. John and Charlotte had just two daughters that I can be certain about, Sarah Ann in 1832 and Elizabeth in 1836.

Sarah Ann’s sister Elizabeth remained a spinster all her life.

Sarah Ann’s husband Joseph Perry was a ‘Farmer of three acres’ and ‘Farm Labourer’ It seems from looking at the census records after their marriage that he suffered mentally as in 1871 he was an inmate at the workhouse described as a lunatic. 1881 he was home with his wife and two of his children, 1891 he was at home with his family living on his own means. Sarah Ann died in May 1896 of heart disease and chronic bronchitis.

Sarah Ann was buried in St. Barnabas Churchyard, where she was married, with her parents and later her son Walter and his wife Rhoda, and son Stanley Flook Perry who died aged 29 of Tuberculosis, and daughter Rhoda Phyllis.

Joseph died at the County Lunatic Asylum, Wotton Hill, Gloucestershire on 1 June 1906. Cause of death senile decay, senile dementia.

Sarah and Joseph Perry had had five children.

Was it one of the daughters, Sarah Jane or Clara Ann with her mother in the photo? As Sarah Jane the eldest daughter never married and Clara did I would guess that it’s more likely to be her in the photo above as it looks like she lived with her mother until her death in 1896.

It’s always nice also to try and identify whoever wrote the name on the back of the photo. Still, in this case, I have found 23 possible Grandchildren of Sarah Ann and Joseph, so although I haven’t researched them I would imagine there to be quite a few possibilities. Here’s a link to the small tree I have compiled on Ancestry for Sarah Ann Perry (Flook): Flook/Perry Sarah Ann Family
